A catalogue of the books, etc. [manuscript], Exeter, England, 1714.

Manuscript catalog in a single neat old hand, paginated. Table of contents for entire book on prelim. p. [2], of which library catalog comprises p. 57-99 only. Catalog is divided into columns for author, title, edition, place of imprint, year of imprint, and "prices or values" (i.e., amount paid in pounds, shillings and pence). Books are arranged by format and then by subject, e.g., "Divinity", "Philosophy & mathematicks", "History, geography, & chronology", "Humanity", "Miscellaneous tracts", etc. Most books and pamphlets listed are contemporary theological works and sermons in English. The rest of the book comprises notes for homilies and sermons, and p. 100-240, entitled "An alphabetical common place-book" in the table of contents, is a listing of sermon topics (e.g., "Aaron's calf", "Abuses & affronts", "Children", "Frugality" and "Prejudices") followed by references to works where these topics are discussed. Three small loose leaves of sermon notes, in same old hand, are laid in.

Stephen Weston, bishop of Exeter, was born at Farnborough, Berkshire, on 25 Dec. 1665 or 1666. He was educated at Eton, and proceeded to King's College, Cambridge, where he was admitted scholar on 18 May 1683. He graduated B.A. in 1686-7, M.A. 1690, and became a fellow of his college. In 1698-9 he gave to the college the twelve folio volumes of Graevius's Thesaurus antiquitatum romanarum.
